Training for Change: Transforming Systems To Be Trauma Informed, Culturally Responsive, and Neuroscientifically Focused (December 2026)

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention nearly 61% of adults have had at least one adverse childhood experience. These traumatic experiences increase the risk of chronic medical conditions, mental illness and substance use disorders.

Becoming a trauma-informed individual, organization and society lowers stress levels, improves quality of life, and reduces disease burden while supporting global well-being and promoting healing.

With this is mind, McLean Hospital’s Institute for Trauma-Informed Systems Change incorporates the latest updates in neuroscience, trauma, and trauma-informed practices to offer training in trauma-informed practices and approaches, brain development and human behavior, the neuroscience of fear, stress and trauma and trauma-informed systems change.

These courses are ideal for individuals and organizations who want to effectively implement and execute trauma-informed systems change centered around safety, mattering and healing.

1. Explore brain development as a means of understanding human behavior
2. Describe the neurobiology of fear and its connection to trauma
3. Identify the neurobiology of PTSD
4. Explain racial trauma in the context of PTSD
5. Describe the impact of chronic exposure to the suffering of others on the psyche and physical health
6. Explain how to identify trauma in a system
7. Discuss the importance of creating safety for individuals that the systems seek to serve and members of any given system
8. Apply a trauma-informed lens to practices, policies, procedures and narrative
9. Demonstrate awareness of the pervasive and deleterious impact of trauma and how to effectively address it
10. Explore the intersection of disability, race and trauma
11. Describe the historical overlay of the trauma of racism
12. Recognize organizational trauma
