Overview

Interest in self and self pathology has increased somewhat in recent years largely in the context of definition and classification. Despite this interest, self is rarely defined, and the term is used in various ways. Few attempts have been made to construct a systematic taxonomy of its psychopathology. This workshop will describe a model of the self and an associated taxonomy of self pathology and review the implications of this model for classification and treatment of personality disorders. The workshop will outline current gaps and lack of a consensus in understanding the self before reviewing an evolutionary approach to selfhood. A conceptual model of contemporary selfhood will then be proposed. The workshop will then describe the role of the self in personality disorder and different forms of self pathology. Finally, it will outline the implications of this model for both diagnostic classification and treatment of personality disorders, and demonstrate good clinical practice through case vignettes.

Offered by the Gunderson Personality Disorder Institute at McLean Hospital.
