Overview

This intensive 2-day training is designed to deepen and consolidate the core skills of mentalization-based treatment (MBT) for clinicians who are already applying MBT in their clinical work and, ideally, receiving ongoing supervision.

Building on MBT Basic Training, the course moves beyond foundational knowledge to support the development of greater confidence, flexibility, and clinical fluency in the use of MBT interventions. Through an interactive format, participants will strengthen their ability to maintain a mentalizing stance and apply MBT techniques effectively in complex clinical situations.

A central focus of the training is intensive skills development. Participants will work closely with the MBT Adherence and Competence Scale (MBT-ACS) for individual therapy and refine their practice through demonstrations, video review, structured exercises, and role play.

The course culminates in a standardized video assessment in which participants demonstrate their use of MBT interventions within a simulated clinical scenario with an actor. Successful completion of this assessment fulfills a requirement for recognition as an MBT Practitioner through the Anna Freud Centre.

Clinical Presentation Opportunity

A limited number of participants will have the opportunity to present clinical material for discussion and feedback. Presentations may take the form of:

  • A video or audio recording of a clinical session, or

  • A clinical challenge explored through role play.

Presentations focus on the identification and application of MBT interventions and provide an opportunity for in-depth consultation with faculty and peers.

Participants who present clinical work will receive credit for one supervised case toward MBT Practitioner status through the Anna Freud Centre. Appropriate patient consent is required for any clinical material used in training.

Presentation spaces are limited to 5 participants. To apply, please contact the MBT Training Center.

Course Format

This virtual training includes:

  • 2 days of live, instructor-led training

  • 4 hours of self-paced learning activities

Participants will complete required assignments before, between, and after the live sessions to support integration of learning. Self-paced learning hours are not included in CME credit calculations.
